To create social change, we need to get a lay of the land, to see how things are now. And to face and assess the power dynamics as they currently exist. Before meeting with power holders, it is a good idea to take the time to assess the players in the situation, understanding their level of influence, their spheres of influence, and their motivation on the issue. This mapping process helps with this assessment. Plus, it encourages change agents to be prepared to talk with targets, whether they are potential allies or likely adversaries, to research their background and history of support or opposition on the issue or similar issues. It helps determine where the potential for relationship and collaboration development might be.
