Before we take a detailed look at key to the highway, let's just take a look at the big Bill's phone, which is really important. I was really no big bill doubt his basis with his right arm. So playing it, he only played this kind of style. And often we just hit one bass string. Very often bass uses thumbs that kind of a strumming device as well. This getting three or four strings then that way if you listen to his, his rendition of, hey, hey, sometimes posted on YouTube as guitar shuffle, you can see this technique very, very clearly.
When we play a key to the highway, we'll attempt to use a combination of these things. Sometimes a string will ring. Particularly if we're using the high strings which make a nice combination sounds. Sometimes we'll just have the one string. Sometimes we'll hit two or three. And then damned and I haven't really noted this in the instruction, but it's just a case of how you feel it.
I have two versions of this this great song and most people have a version. One version I try and keep the really to the wrist of Big Bill used is more delicate, it's it's more complex. And I like to play this in performance or in quiet situations. But when I play on the street, I have another version. Often you hear this song played in this way. In fact, big Bill's ambition was much more refined and delicate.
That's the story. going to look at now. These are the chords we're going to use in key to the highway. We've got a B seven in two variations, a seven, and a seven. Now let's take a look at the introduction. Now let's combine those last two sections and take a look at what the left hand is doing.
See how the words fit in with this style of play the key to the highway Yes, I have to go this time yes this time While I play the verse in this style, it's very, very similar to the introduction. So I haven't tapped all of it. The only differences are in Section three, when they move to a seven. I just have them with my thumb. In this way, I get the key to the highway. Yes, I have to go.
I haven't tapped this, you can improvise with this and give it your own feeling. The other two differences are in Section six and seven right at the end. Listen to this. I get the key to the highway. Yes, I'll have to go And this time baby back. So this little section at the end, this is what I put down in tablature.
And it follows now Hi, welcome back. I hope you enjoyed that. I want to play this song on the street, okay in a different way. First of all I wear a thumb pick and a steel finger pick two things because they're natural amplifiers. Even though I'll use an amplifier and it saves my fingers. After play on the street for two or three hours, you really need to save your fingers.
It gives a different sound. It simplifies my playing a little bit. So instead of using a delicate stroke kinda thing that we looked at in the last video As part of this video, I tend to hit two or three strings with my finger at the same time. It makes a nice sound, it's nice and bluesy and it attracts attention. When I play on the street, I use a standard Dunlop steel pick up my finger, but I bend it over so the contact point is the same as the ball of my finger. The street version sounds like this finished with a nice flourish there.
Let's take a look at this version in our next part of the video. Good luck. Now let's take a look at how to play this street version of key to the highway. You'll see my right hand with the tablature as usual, but I haven't used the left hand video for this section. I think you have enough idea from the previous sections to work it out.
