Traditionally, the Teachers had always planned their lessons in accordance with the syllabus and they had an objective for teaching each class. But this always had been a static process without taking into consideration the varied learning preferences and levels of preparedness of the students to learn the subject. The advent of computers, the internet, and multimedia have invaded teaching and learning space so much that it is necessary for any teacher to be aware of the immense potential and possibilities that these offer to enhance or enrich their teaching. But the integration of technology cannot be an arbitrary exercise without taking into account the suitability of the medium or technology to design, develop, and deliver the content and course.

A basic Instructional Design model for the traditional classroom incorporates the components of content, learning objectives, delivery, and evaluation. Taking into account the students' knowledge, skills, and abilities, the subject matter experts, teachers determine the topics which comprise the content that is generally presented as the course description. Learning objectives are derived from the content. Delivery is about designing learning experiences for the students. The evaluation consists of those student tests and tasks designed to meet the learning objectives.

Earlier, our thinking used to be that technology was essential for only online courses and not for traditional classroom-based courses. However, this has changed radically on two counts. One, online components are becoming essential parts of any course to varying extents. Second, technology is increasingly being deployed within the classroom to either enhance the teaching or to enrich the students learning. technology is being sought after not only to extend or augment the delivery of courses, even the format of the content is being changed to include various components of multimedia to present a more engaging course to the students. Teachers and students today appreciate and accept such integration of technology into the courses than anyone else in education.

However, mere perfunctory knowledge of such technology options and teaching and learning opportunities are not enough for the teachers to design and develop a technology-rich curriculum, content, and course delivery. teachers need a far more involved immersion or abilities and skills to consider such options intelligently. They need to bring together the components of the course, delivery options, technology affordances, and the varied learning preferences of their students into their planning process to provide a robust course.

This course is not a How-to-do manual on technology integrated design for courses or teaching. But it seeks to develop those abilities in teachers to be aware of such potential of technology and to be able to think and choose the options themselves. This course is aimed to provide you the necessary foundational knowledge and understanding of learning theories and instructional design models. This course will enable you to think of the possible application of educational technology and teaching methodologies to your course design and development. This course will also sensitize you towards the need for diversity and flexibility in delivering the course to varied types of learners with their preferred learning styles. This course enables you to use your creativity and originality to think of innovative methods of teaching and developing course content.
