You need several competencies to be a world-class Instructional Designer.

You need to have an aptitude for teaching or training. You also need to have a keen desire and motivation to understand the learning process in students. 

A keen eye for detail and a deep sense of appreciation for student preferences would help you succeed as a teacher or a trainer.

You need to have an appropriate level of language skills to be able to communicate effectively and to be able to develop course documents.

An adequate level of understanding of the technologies involved and the tools available in the age of the internet will be an asset to help design the teaching and learning activities.

An appreciation of the psychology of learning and motivation will help sharpen your sensitivities to the needs of students and their abilities Awareness of the media landscape and their applicability to learning and teaching will enhance the scope of your teaching abilities and building the necessary competencies of a designer.

The teachers also need to have specific competencies to work in a collaborative team environment, communication skills, organization skills, project management skills. 

In the academic setting, they must also possess teaching experience, conducting and publishing research, knowledge of pedagogy, supervising the students, ability to consult and provide support for faculty, and developing curriculum.

In the technical category, skills in web programming and scripting, web authoring tools, multimedia production tools, use of software, image editing tools, course management systems, audio/video editing, hardware, and database design and use are desired.

In the instructional technology category, expertise in instructional technologies, instructional design process, integration of technologies, background in emergent technologies, management of technological systems are important.
