Hello and welcome to the course emotional intelligence what's in it for me? This module will cover the topic of thought awareness or self talk. This is I ness Jordan, your emotional intelligence instructor and coach. Let's dig right in. Thought awareness is consciously focusing on your thoughts for a specific amount of time. recognizing your feelings or body changes, and then exercising control of your thoughts, versus letting your thoughts control you.
Self talk is what you say to yourself silently throughout the day, as you are faced with situations at home, at work in your car at the store, when you're angry, when you're sad, etc. This internal voice continues whether we are aware of it or not. Please pause here and think of a stressful situation. what occurred? And how did you handle it? Now for reflection, list each of the thoughts that came to mind during and after the situation, both negative and positive.
What types of emotions did you experience? Use your personal project worksheet to capture your thoughts. Did you know that we have between 50 and 70,000 thoughts per day? And most of those thoughts are negative. How do you manage your thoughts? The emotional intelligence awareness skills that will show you how to change your negative thoughts by increasing your awareness of your emotions and feelings and provide suggestions for counteracting negative thoughts when they come to mind.
Here are several questions that will help you to to fuse your negative thoughts and self talk as they occur throughout the day. Ask yourself the following questions about that stressful situation from exercise number one. Is there proof that the negative thought is true? Could there be an alternative that you have not considered? Step outside the situation? Could you be overreacting?
How would you advise someone in a similar situation? Have you been in this situation before? How did you handle it? Are there lessons learned from the past? Okay, time for reflection. Was this exercise helpful?
During the exercise? Did you come up with different ways that you could have reacted to that stressful situation? Were there any surprises? practice these two exercises constantly when stressful or difficult situations arise? review the question list as you analyze the situation Before you react improved emotional intelligence increases our awareness skills, which leads to more success in professional and personal life. Wow.
We learned a lot in this course about what emotional intelligence is an added more insight to answer the question, what is emotional intelligence and what's in it for me? We discussed thought awareness and completed several exercises that can be used continuously going forward to recognize and address negative thoughts and self talk.
