DESCRIPTION: Humans are creatures of habits and almost every decision we make is influenced by our comfort zone. Edward De Bono in the 1980s introduced a technique called the “6 Thinking Hats”, which propels an individual to indulge in out-of-the-box thinking or thinking out of their “habitual zone”. This chapter explains that technique and its importance in a coaching. Using this tool, the coaches can help their clients to be self-reflective and get a 360-degree view of their current state of mind and life. The technique is equally important for the coaches to develop a strong coaching mindset. The chapter ends with a group learning exercise involving the ICF Core competencies (active listening (CC6) and evoking awareness (CC7)) and the behavioral indicators.
