DESCRIPTION:

7 vital secrets about safety. General safety in towns. Before setting off to walk through a town or city:

Remind the group not to carry valuables with them such as passports, tickets, large amounts of money. Use the hotel safe or camp locker
Point out that you are not taking them into a dangerous area but that poverty inevitably brings the risk of crime. So hold on tight to bags, cameras, and wallets. Never leave a wallet in a back trouser pocket. Holding a bag in front of the body is safer than wearing it on the back. Make sure zips are done up and never leave a bag or man bag unattended, nor put it down whilst shopping.
Be aware of local scams. Keep an eye open for groups of young men, women carrying babies with outstretched hands, gypsies offering to sell flowers, or tell fortunes. Sadly there are plenty of scams around.
Never change money on the street, no matter what tempting rate is on offer. A reputable money changer almost always works from an office, so ask to see...
