Local guides are invaluable - you can't do your job without them. They have the local knowledge you have no access to, such as up-to-date information on local situations, changes of ownership, and so on.
The local guide, like the tour leader, can make or break a holiday. A good guide will stay in the memory for many years; a bad one can spoil even the best-organized tour.
Be aware of cultural differences and defer to the local culture - within reason. For example, many eastern men are not used to having a female 'boss' - and on tour, you as a tour leader are the 'boss', male or female. Likewise, they may be uncomfortable deferring to a younger man or someone less experienced than them.
Try to spend some time with your local guide - have a drink together and if invited, visit her/his family, help load and unload bags, and so on. You need to be firm at all times - you are in charge of the tour at all times - but listen to his/her...
