DESCRIPTION:

Part 2

Make sure you do a reconnaissance walk yourself, or at least have with you notes made by another tour leader (it's not a good idea to rely on a well-meaning local, they don't have the responsibilities you have)
Take any notes/sketch maps/ ordnance survey maps or local equivalents
Stop to rest in the shade regularly, but not so frequently that the pace is interrupted
Make sure you give everyone a rest, including those who arrive after the main group. If there is a wide gap between first and last, allow the leaders to set off slightly earlier rather than push the latecomers to keep going
Set a steady pace, slow to begin with. You can speed up a bit later when everyone has settled into a rhythm. You don't have to be always at the front. Slip back occasionally and mingle with your group.
Watch people - look for signs of exhaustion (going quiet, or getting excitable, stumbling, withdrawing from the main group)
Suggest walking in time with breathing. Counting to ten repeatedly...
