Part 2: Canoes

First rule: never enter the water if it is dangerous for you to do so.
In the event of a capsize, keep hold of the boat. You can float downstream to a landing place. Better still, right the canoe and float using your hands as paddles until help arrives or you reach the shore. This is easier than trying to hold onto a slippery hull, and in this situation, you need to conserve energy
Always wear a lifejacket. Always. No exceptions
Never enter a river or lake without a local guide to accompany or watch you
If you capsize in white water, swim quickly upstream of the canoe
Swim to the bank as quickly as you can. If you miss a safe spot, don't try to swim back upstream. Float and climb out further downstream
Don't go over a waterfall trying to rescue your boat
In open water, try to right the canoe and climb in
Retrieve paddles and extra life jackets only if you can do it without leaving the boat
