Part 4 - Canals, The Sea and Lakes

Never enter the water if it is dangerous for you to do so
Know what flags are flying - always look for warning flags and check which flag means you should not enter the water: the currents may be dangerous, or there may be sharks, jellyfish, or other dangers
Check for lifeguards on duty. If they are available ask them for any updates you should be aware of e.g. storm warnings.
Check the weather forecast
Always do a safety drill or ensure the activity operator does one
Be aware of how many people are in the water, the age range, and ability - young children should always be accompanied by an adult - and that's not you! You are responsible for the group
Never allow anyone to stray far from the shore - deadly currents are hardly ever visible from the shore. Make sure you can swim out as far as everyone in your group goes. Everyone should stay within their own depth while you are responsible for them
