DESCRIPTION:

One of the skills you need is the ability to balance taking care of your group and giving them freedom when they want it. As you'll learn in the 'cultural differences' section, different nationalities have different expectations of the group leader.

Don't 'nanny' your group but make sure they are aware that you are there for them when they need you. You are NOT their parents or guardian. They are adults.
Allow plenty of free time; make suggestions that you think will interest them but allow them to 'discover' things for themselves. Some clients love to show off to the tour leader a new sight or restaurant they've come across - be enthusiastic and appreciative even if you don't think much of it.
Never put clients down with your superior knowledge: you are not their schoolteacher, even if you sometimes play that role.
If clients want to be accompanied on - for example - a shopping trip, then go with them, but don't pressurise everyone to join in with all the optional...
