Directing is all about carrying the vision of the film on your shoulders. The position is to be a creative leader who guides the path of the story for others to follow. Each department will have its duties. cinematography will focus on the lighting, costume design will work on the wardrobe, and production design will build the sets. If you hire the right team, your responsibility will not be department management; rather, it will be a creative collaborator. You are providing each contributor with the information they need to serve the overall vision better.

Jobs that a director collaborates with:

  • Cinematography
  • Editing
  • Producing
  • Writing
  • VFX
  • Composing
  • Wardrobe
  • Makeup
  • Production design
  • Acting
  • Sound design
  • Distribution

Now while the director shouldn't tackle all of these titles, it is very common for this to happen on smaller budget productions. Personally, while working on my first dozen films I wore nearly every single hat, from producer to make-up artist but as my career expanded so did my team and organically I took on fewer positions and am now able to focus just on directing This doesn't mean you can't be hands on either, all it means is that you have more time/resources to contribute to the all mighty story
