The rules of framing

There are some common rules and guidelines that are used when framing that are important to know to improve your shots and sequence of shots. These are:

Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is a gird that you can place over your photos (most cameras have this overlay option built in to help you frame within it) to give them a more eye-appealing composition. Here is an example of this grid:

Rule of 180

The rule of 180 applies to framing within a conversation scene when cutting back in forth between two people speaking to one another. This is also known as "the Axis", which is something you never want to cross. Here is an overhead view of our two subjects:
