Who is the camera?

This might seem like a strange question when you first look at it. I have to say off the bat that I'm not describing only POV-style cinema. When I ask this question I want you to consider that the camera is like carrying a tiny little movie theatre around with you - full house, people stuffing popcorn dying to be entertained. Know that you are guiding their viewpoint on the entire story and so giving them a thematic identity within the story is really valuable.
This is a really key thematic conversation that you should have with the director, and in asking them - if they don't know the answer immediately, try to stress what different styles could mean for the viewer. Some common ways we identify the camera are:
