This tutorial takes you through another vital part of facial animation – the eye blink. Here, you will learn to use facilities such as Shape Tween and Motion Tween along with the Masking technique to create realistic eye blink for your human character. Remember, eyes are the most expressive part of any animated character, and eye blinks are the one of the most fundamental expressions your character displays. When you're done with this one, you will know how to animate eye blinks professionally, and how to get it right in the first go!

Hi, and welcome to another tutorial by aro media. Today we got you one more video tutorial. In this we are going to set up an eyeblink animation for the character with a simple but effective technique. The eyeblink is a very important part of any character animation. So it is good to know how to create it. First of all, we will need a character as per our earlier tutorials, we have already character with us.

Let's open that Flash file character for animation. This is the character file which is kept rigged and ready for animation. This is the character on which we will set the eyeblink in the timeline. The frames are already extended up to 50 frames double click on the character To enter a symbol. Here too, we find a number of symbols distributed in different layers out of them, big the head symbol. Double click on this symbol to hear as well.

All the head parts are in different layers. Check if the eyes are converted into symbols. Now, look all the less except the eyes. One by one, we will create eye blinks for both the eyes. Let's start with the left eye first, double click and step inside this AI symbol. In this, all the AI bots are individually grouped, but kept on a single layer.

Firstly, extend the timeline frames up to 50. Now, we want all these AI groups to be distributed on individual layers. So select them all and go to modify timeline. Distribute two layers, or the shortcut key is control plus shift plus d. Delete this blank and unwanted layer as seen in the video. Now we got three new layers, one of a white batch, second of the eyeball or pupil, and third of the outline circle, without affecting any of these layers, we will create the eyeblink. So let's start.

Add a New Layer about the pure layer except this new layer, lock all the other layers. The eyeblink normally will not start from the first frame of the animation. So insert a blank keyframe at the eighth frame. Using the characters same skin tone, draw a rectangle using the rectangle tool above the eye area as seen in the video. The outline looks too thick. So open the Properties panel and change its thickness To 0.5 which is the character outline thickness curve that bottom line of the rectangle upwards as seen in the video.

This rectangles height and width should be more than the eye sizes, if not adjusted. Using the free transform tool, slightly rotate this new patch towards our right as shown. Now, press f6 at the 15th frame, and on this key, move the rectangle down to cover the eye area. Then, also change its curve to the opposite direction. Between these keys, right click and create shaped when you can see how smoothly The eye is closed with a blink effect. Similarly, it will open within a few frames for that So the new keyframe at the 20th frame and paste the duplicate of the first key of the rectangle at the 28th frame.

Remove the unwanted twin ahead of this key and create shape to in between these keys. Now the rectangle takes a reverse action to open the eye area. The blink action is done, but we want to make it viewable only on the eye area. So, about this rectangle layer, create one more layer. Unlock to copy the eye circular white patch and paste it on the new layer. Right click on its layer name and put it on mask.

Now we notice that only within that circular eye area or rectangular patch animation is visible. And it simply gives us a feel of the eye blinking. But it's not done yet. If you Observe carefully, along with the characters eye blink. We also noticed a slight movement of the pupil as well. So let's edit them as well from better and realistic results exactly parallel to the eye blink keyframes.

Insert new keys on the pupil layer at the eighth and 15th frames. Hide the blink layer to view the pupil on stage. On this second key, shift the pupil down a little and then right click and create motion tween between the keys unhide the blink layer and view the movement of it. Similarly, when the eye opens up, the pupil will go back to its original position. So press f6 at its 20th frame and duplicate its eighth frame position at the 28th frame rankly to create motion tween and remove the unwanted twin. We can see How the pupil movement is noticeable along with the eye blink.

It's a very small movement, but gives a completely realistic feel to the characters eye blink exit to the head symbol. When played here, we notice that the pupil movement should start somewhat after a few frames. It should start when the eyelid reaches close to the pupil. So, shift this first motion key of the pupil to the 10th frame. And then last motion key at the 26th frame. This gives a better result.

Exit to the head symbol and move towards the second eye. That is the right eye of the character. Double click on it to enter that symbol. Extend the frame still 50 we are going to repeat the same procedure and steps we did to create the left eyebrow Here to all the groups are kept on a single layer, grab them all, and go to modify timeline, distribute two layers Ctrl plus shift plus d is the shortcut key to it. We get three new layers in the timeline. Remove the unwanted blank layer, each part that is the white patch.

The pupil and the outline are on different layers. Add New Layer about the pupil, we have to use the same time interval we use for the left eye blink. So create the first blank key on the eighth frame. Draw a rectangle about the eye area using the same character skintone. Rotate the rectangle towards our left using the free transform tool. Go to the bottom line of the rectangle.

Also add the remaining size of it as per the eye size. insert a new key at frame 15. On this key, shift the rectangle downwards and then also change its curb to the opposite direction. In the timeline, right click and create shape tween between those keys. The next action is to open the eye. Go to frame number 20 and insert a new keyframe.

Hold down the Alt key and duplicate the first key of the rectangle to place it on the 20th frame of the same layer. Create shape tween between these keys. as well and remove the unwanted when the rectangle animation part is done. Now, add one more layer above it as seen in the video. Copy the eyes wide patch and press Ctrl plus shift plus V to paste and place it on the new layer. Right click on this new layer name and put it on mask option.

So, now the rectangular animation part will only be visible in this circular area and will work as an eyeblink now the pupil movement on its layer, add new keyframes directly at frames 10 and 15. Hide the blink layer to view the pupil area on the 15th frame. shift this pupil down right click to create motion tween between the keys. Next, press f6 on the 20th frame. Duplicate the original positions key on the 26th frame. Here to create motion tween between the keys.

Exit to the head symbol and view both the eye blinks together. As for both the eyes, we kept the key frame positions of the blink layers and the pupil as the same. both eyes look like they are blinking. That's it. We are done with this tutorial. So without affecting the eyes, we created very convincing eye blink in a very simple way.

Using this simple technique, we can add eyeblink to any of the character we created. Thanks for watching.
