So I want to think a bit more about presence. And I always go back to my old drama school teacher. And she would say to me, Danny, if you want to have presence, then you need to be present. She was very good. Now, there's a lot in that statement to think about. And one of the things that I want you to concentrate on is, what do I have to do in order to be present when I'm on stage?
I think one of the main thing that gets in the way for most of us when we're on stage is that we have an inner voice that's running all the time, that might be saying things like, I'm feeling nervous, or this auditorium is a lot bigger than I was expecting, or what is my next line, all the things that keep us occupied on stage and make us feel more nervous. Now, if that's you, and you need to do more work on this, then go back to I prepare because I have a lot in there about how to work on your beliefs and your inner script that isn't holding you back. However, it's also important to try to tame that in the moment when you're on stage. So I'd like you to think about presence in terms of being calm. So stand on both feet as much as you can when you're on stage.
And take deep breaths and just relax. I like to say have heavy leg. Heavy legs will help you stay more in the moment. And breathing more deeply will help your brain to let go of some of that chatter. So if you want to have more presence, then have more calm and try to control that in a script, have some discipline over that. It's not useful to you in the moment.
What you want to be thinking about is just what you're doing right now. The calmness and presence for me go hand in hand and here's a little extra bonus tip for you. If you do get on stage and you'll suddenly find about a minute in, you're feeling nervous. Then plan a break at that point and make sure that you have a glass of water. So just take a drink, take a breath and get back to that calmness so that you can have more presence right here right now.
