Lab Testing (Best)
Talk Test
Field tests (FTP, FTHr)

The first (and best) option is Metabolic Fitness Testing in the lab. This is an advanced assessment service that can provide you with critical fitness information highly specific to your health or fitness goals. By determining heart rates and work rates at various ventilatory and lactate thresholds you can determine very precise heart rate training zones to target your preferred training effect. Many of the generic heart rate training formulas do not take into account genetic and fitness-related variables that can significantly alter those training guidelines. In the LA and SD County areas you can get tested here. If you have the ability we highly recommend metabolic testing.
If you can't do option #1 in the lab then there are other field test options available to help you estimate these values. See option #2 and #3.
