Opposites as Movement Qualities

The purpose of this modality is to embody different movements to expand our movement vocabulary and that we are not “stuck” in one or a few qualities when we are improvising. Each quality has it’s opposite, like day-night, yin - yang, male-female.

Here we will try just a few:

  • impulse/impact
  • fast/slow
  • maximum/minimum
  • isolation/whole body
  • finished/unfinished
  • hard/soft
  • continued/fragmented
  • diagonal/same side
  • deliberately/accidental
  • attack/withdrawal
  • horizontal/vertical
  • natural/artificial

but there is an endless list of specific qualities that we can train. And the possibilities are endless. only limited by your imagination.

Back in days when I had my own dance company, I remember that we went through more than 100 specific qualities and their opposites in the time span of 6 months. It was fun and hard work at the same time very enriching and expended our movement and dance qualities in improvisation and performance.
