3 Universal Movement Qualities (3Q) The purpose of this modality is to illustrate the relationship between movement, dance, and kinesthetic intelligence by developing awareness of basic movement dynamics inside and outside of us. It is an attempt to sense, embody, and understand three basic qualities. It also leads to developing creative autonomy in free expression by developing a will and by nurturing willingness.

Three Qualities relates to:

  1. Circular (movement on an emotional level, rounded, spiral, natural flows, feminine) vs. Architectural (movement on a mind level, constructed, predicted, masculine)
  2. Traveling (through space) vs. Being on the Spot (grounded)
  3. Stable vs. Unstable The aim of dancers is to understand the variety of qualities their movement can express. These three qualities are a base from which varieties of other qualities arise. For further training and development, they can explore and define other qualities.

How do we perceive movement and the flow inside and outside of us? All the movement and flow inside of us, on the physical, mental and emotional levels, or outside of us in the world and in the universe are all running on these three qualities.

  • The 1st quality and the most natural movement is the circular–rounded–spiral movement of the body, or even on a smaller scale, on a molecular level, or on a larger scale, like the planet Earth and galaxies. The opposite of this quality is architectural movement, which means that it comes from the mind, it’s constructed by ourselves, it’s predicted. So, what we build in our life is very architectural, because it’s mind driven.
  • 2nd quality is very simple. Are we doing things on the spot or are we moving through space? Are we working in the same place (not just physical, but also mental, emotional), or are we moving through life, through work, through space, through actions by using energy and will?
  • The 3rd quality is stable/unstable. When you want to create stable movements or situations, you need to engage with your core energy and will. To have a balance, you need to expand your core energy, and to have power, you need to compress that energy. And the opposite is unstable movement or situation. You all know situations or moments in your life when you felt there was no ground beneath your feet, that there was nothing to grab, that everything was very unstable. This feeling is very natural, we are just afraid of it. But how to accept this quality and move inside of it.
