The purpose of this modality is to connect breathing with movements and actions in a surprising way. This tool for improvisation will enhance the quality of your movements, expression, and speed. It also shows how we can use our breathing and voice in improvisation and performing.

For me, Surprise Breath simply means that we have to break the pattern of our breathing inhalations–exhalations and surprise ourselves with the unlimited possibilities of our inhalations–exhalations while directly connecting our breathing to movements and actions.

This modality goes 10 levels deep, and instructions are in the video below.

  • Level 1 – connecting breathing with movements/kinetically
  • Level 2 – connecting breathing with actions/imaginatively
  • Level 3 – expanding breathing to sounds/kinetically and imaginatively
  • Level 4 – maximum sound/kinetically and imaginatively
  • Level 5 – minimum sound / kinetically and imaginatively
  • Level 6 – a mix of maximum and minimum sound/kinetically and imaginatively
  • Level 7 – solo and group soundscape/kinetically and imaginatively
  • Level 8 – full-speed precise actions/kinetically and imaginatively
  • Level 9 – sound and word synchronization/kinetically and imaginatively
  • Level 10 – group improvisation
