Find out what your child’s goals are for participating in a sport. Don’t expect a return on your investment (in regard to a college scholarship or a professional career). Your son or daughter is not your 401K plan!


What are some things that parents can talk to a coach about without being considered helicopter parents? It would be okay for parents to discuss assisting with team dinners, fundraisers, program needs, your child’s behavioral concerns, etc.   


Initially, there should be an understanding that the child should first discuss a situation with the coach. If the player/coach meeting can’t resolve the situation, then a parent could contact the coach. Parents will often comment that my son or daughter is not old enough or confident enough to talk to the coach. When will they be old enough? Is it when they get to college? I challenge the parents to encourage their children to break through fears and develop great communication skills when they are young.  It will serve...
