Coaches do play favorites. They tend to favor these types of individuals:

Players who are great decision-makers at home, in school, in public, and in sports
Players who give the team the best chance to win 
Players who have great attitudes
Players who work hard every day
Players who embrace their role (regardless of what that role is) 
Players who support the program’s culture

Questions to ask yourself before approaching a coach:

Is my child giving his best at practice?
What kind of attitude does my child have at practice and during games?
Has my child had a conversation with their coach about how to get more playing time?
If so, have they actually tried to apply what the coach told them to do?
Does my child love playing or do they like to play for something to do?
Is my child self-motivated by practicing on their own when no one tells them?
