Studies have shown that there is an 85% increase in anxiety and rates of depression in teens ages 14-17 increased 60% from 2009-2017. Why are they having so many issues? Too much on their plate? Pressures to be at the highest level? Here is the reality there are 75 academic scholarships to 1 athletic scholarship – less than 3%, DI less than 1%.
If youth are not engaged in an extracurricular activity, they seem to be filling their time in front of screens and not developing healthy habits of how to use technology in moderation.
The good news is sports can provide an atmosphere where kids spend more time in person with their peers. However, the statistics that show out of the 20 million kids that register for competitive youth sports each year that 70 percent of them quit playing these sports by the age of 13 and never play them again.
