DESCRIPTION: 
Parents are sometimes susceptible to treating their children differently based on whether they won or lost, or whether they played well or played poorly. I strongly suggest that you be conscious of your demeanor as a parent following a game and take a consistent approach that communicates a supportive stance to your child, regardless of the outcome.
Instead of focusing on the outcome, give positive feedback on effort.  Anytime we compete we take the risk of winning or losing.  Be specific in your encouragement and say things like, “I really love how you tried your best on that one play, and even though things didn’t go your way you still tried hard!”  Emphasize that failure is ok as long as your child gave their best effort.
Let your child know that a competitor never loses because they see a loss as an opportunity to learn and grow. Let the losses motivate you to improve, work harder, and work smarter the next opportunity you get.
