I'm all getting me on Mojo. The first thing to learn is the shuffle rhythm. So for playing in the key of E, I put my first finger on the second fret of the fifth string, and I've got an open sixth string. And what I'm doing is just taking my keeping my first finger anchored and with my thumb pick, if you watch the old video of lightning play in this, place all this with a thumb and I'm moving. With my first finger held there, I'm moving my ring finger to the fourth fret of the fifth string. And that's where I get that shuffle rhythm from my right hand pawn is resting gently on the sixth and the fifth strings down here by the bridge to keep the strings muted just a little bit.

So you got this. Now, you'll notice those Little cord things cord flurries flourishes that lightning throws in, or that I was playing. And I got this from lightning Hopkins, all he's doing is he's taking his first finger and just strumming up on the anywhere from the first and second strings to the first, second and third, maybe even part of the fourth. You can change how aggressively you hit that, hit those strings and it will sound a little bit differently. And if you listen to his versions, he does that. So we're playing this right there is we get ready to come back down on the on the sixth string with our first finger at the second fret of the fifth string.

That's when he does it. So watch the timing. Like that. And then when it goes over the four, we're just taking that first finger and moving it to The fourth string. Now we've got the open fifth with the open A string. And we're doing the exact same thing with our ring finger, fourth fret of the fourth string.

Then we get ready to go back to the one. We got one of those if you want to do it straight time, it would sound like this. Lightning as lightning tended to do might drift away from the traditional time and he might stay on the for a little longer. He might cut the five short, lightning did what he wanted to do. And so if you listen to the original recording, sometimes you'll hear him you know, not sticking to the straight time structure, which is fine. That's one of the great things about acoustic blues is when you're playing by yourself, you can pretty much do anything you want.

You don't have to worry about the band or anything like that. So anyway, if you listen to the recordings, you'll hear him very sometimes the timing there, and then when it gets out of the shelf, so he's gonna go to the five and we're just strumming chords. So we're gonna go to a b seven. And he varies how he does this. So let me take it from the shuffle that's an a seven, a seven, E, B seven, so the whole thing sounds like this. Then when he starts the next first he holds out and starts to Hang in, and then he comes in.

Again, listen to his recordings, one of the recordings are all the recordings of him playing this and you'll hear, you'll hear that. Now he varies the chord structure. In the film of him playing this he kind of hot dogs a little bit. And when he gets to this chord part, he'll take his fingers up here on the neck and do something like this. Here's how I changed. I'm playing that chord part a lot faster.

He changes the timing of the song, the tempo of the song, but he's playing the same chords. He's playing the E, the B seventh and the eighth seventh in there. So let me play one verse of lightning Hopkins is Mojo hand. And he does this on almost every verse, the same basic thing with a few variations. So I'll play this for you slowly. We started out with the shuffle into the next verse, the strumming part, what I'm doing is a combination downstrokes with my thumb upstrokes with my finger.

So I've got the B seventh part. There's one place where I just stay with the thumb pick on that but you mess around with it and I think if you watch the video and kind of feel the song, you'll see how he uses the strumming. It's really downstroke with the thumb upstroke with a finger or some variation of that. So that is the basic verse that you hear in Mojo Han now he also play some solos. And this is one of the fun parts about playing lightning. Hopkin stuff is he often includes solos.

So we'll learn the two that he plays in Mojo Han here.
