DESCRIPTION: The most common flashback type, Type 1, is the “Ticking Jack-in-the-Box” flashback. These flashbacks are triggered by objects or details—like nouns in a sentence—that were part of the traumatic scene. For example, if I crossed a crosswalk near the post office and got hit by a red car, certain things about that moment would stand out. The red car itself, the post office, the crosswalk, the weather, the shirt I was wearing, and even the time of day were all part of the incident. Our defense system uses these objects as reminders, alerting us when something similar appears in our environment and keeping us on guard.
