Now in this video, we're just going to practice writing the half note and we're going to use the examples that we saw in the video before. And the half note, just like the name implies last for half the duration of a whole note. In other words, two beats. Now half note, kind of looks like a whole note in terms of its head, but it also have has what we call a stem as well. And that stem can point either down, in which case it was on the left hand side of the head, or it can point up in which case it lies on the right hand side of the head. Now, the half node, if it lies on the on a lot of space below, B, the standpoints up but if it's on B or above, the stem will point down.

Now it might be worth just practicing, you know alarm of half notes, you don't need to worry about that. All lines. But for example, you could just start on a node F and just do it a few half notes, just to practice the writing the stems. So, as you can see, the first one is if the stem will be pointing up, G will be pointing up, it will be pointing up from B, the stem will be pointing down, see down the pointing down. So let's write out our first example. We're gonna start by doing the treble clef and the we obviously don't have a key signature, so we know that all the notes on the stave off natural and I'm going to put in the time signature common time.

We're going to leave out the tempo for now. And I'm just gonna put four bars stave double bar line in. And all we need to do now is filling each bar with two half notes per bar on the note E as before, the reason we keeping it so simple in terms of pitch at the moment is just that. You know, for for guitarists, the, the pitch represents the your fretting hand, obviously and the rhythm represents your strumming hand or your picking hand. So you just want to focus on one hand at a time. So, we're going to just keep it simple while we're working on the picking hand.

And now we have four bars, all made up of half notes on the note E. So obviously as you know the way you can't be one 2341234 etc. Now you can also put, have chords having a half note value. So we're just going to put the treble clef again, and a familiar chord. have GB and E, open strings. So I'm just going to put all off node value. And we're going to point the stem down.

You may be asking why we would point the stem down and up because we have a G note which is normally point up. And we have a bn an E note which, which would obviously point down. The reason is that we've got two notes in the chord which would have a stem pointing downwards so those two notes outweigh the one that would normally have a stem pointing upwards. So we'll just go with the downstream Okay, so the, in other words The cord is lying more on the node B and above than it is on the notes and notes below the middle line of the stave. So we want to have that stem pointing down. Okay, and then second half of the bar is just an E. And we'll just do that for each of the bars.

And as you know the values will be exactly the same as the example before except that the there will be a chord having a half of the value as the first half of each bar. So a chord the last two beats 12341234. Now to wrap up, this video is going to look at our half wrist so that is a risk that has offered value to two beats. And our example is going to be almost the same as before, except now we're going to have rest where this cord normally would be, and where this cord normally would be. So we're just gonna fill this in. Now the half wrist is sort of an upside down hallways if you want to think of it like that and it's lying on top of the third line.

Also a colored and rectangle on top of the third line, as opposed to hanging off the fourth line. Okay, so we're going to fill in that in note, you want to have four, you want to make up the value of four beats per bar. So you wouldn't, for example, have nothing on for these two beats. Because you would want to show that there's something happening there even That's something assignments. So you want to have that makes up two and two equals four. So it's really kind of mathematical in a way which might be bad news to some.

I also did really badly at maths at school. So I'm worried if I can do it you can do but you know, you want to have the value the total value of the bar adding up to four beats, we've just got a chord e note and once again, we've got our half wrist making up the first two beats off the bar and ending off with our two beats the end of bar four. So that is the half load. And once again, you may want to experiment with just making up maybe some of your own melodies with half notes. And ones that have you know, strange pointing up and ones that have strange pointing down You know all the notes on the stave in terms of pitch. So what you could do is just do something like this, where you could make up a little melody.

Like that there's two bars there the notes, F and G and then a and b. So you could write that out with upward pointing stems, upward, downward pointing stems and just try and play it on your guitar maybe as well. If you like.
