Now I'm going to introduce you to one more very widely used time signature three, four time. This simply means that we have three quarter notes per bar instead of four. So you can't add like this 123123, etc. The strongest beat of the measure is the first beat and the other two are weaker. Whatever notes we have in a bar, we want the N note values to add up to three quarter notes. So we could have a dotted half note, which would be held for the whole bar.
Or we could use a half note and a quarter note or three quarter notes or six eighth notes, or 12 16th notes or any combination of the above. Here's how the C major scale would sell played with quarter notes in three, four time. Soon we're going to learn how to play a very well known song with a meter of three, four. But before we get there, we're going to practice writing out the C major scale in three, four time.
