Sometimes you'll see a dot next to a note like this dotted half note. Whenever you see a dotted note, it means that the notes value has increased by half its original value. Half a half note is a quarter note. So a dotted half note is a half note plus a quarter note, three beats in total. For a dotted quarter note, you'd add half the quarter notes value. In other words, a dotted quarter note is a quarter note plus an eighth note one and a half beats in total.

For a dotted eighth note, you'd add half the eighth notes value. So a dotted eighth note is an eighth note plus a 16th. Note. This is an odd one, but technically a dotted eighth note is three quarters of a beat in total. You also get dotted wrists that go by exactly the same principle. A dotted half wrist would indicate silence for three beats a dot A quarter wrist would indicate silence for one and a half beats.

And the dotted atheist would indicate silence for three quarters of a beat. Next we'll have a look at an example of dotted notes. And then after that, we will check out an example of dotted wrists. In band one, we have a dotted half note, which is held for three beats, followed by a quarter note to complete the bar. In bar two, we have a dotted quarter note, which is one and a half beats, followed by an eighth note that makes up the first two beats. Then that same phrase is repeated a dotted quarter note followed by an eighth note making up beats three and four.

To count a dotted quarter note followed by an eighth note. Just think of how you would normally count two eighth notes. One and two and the dotted quarter note makes up the one and two and the eighth note makes up the end. This practice will help you to play the notes in the right place. In bar three things start to get interesting. We have a dotted eighth note representing three quarters of the first beat, joined to a 16th.

Note to complete the first beat. Notice how the two are joined as you would join two eighth notes. But the final 16th note has two flags. That's followed by a regular quarter note on B two, then that same phrase is repeated for beats three and four, a dotted eighth note joined to a 16th note, followed by a quarter note to count a dotted eighth note followed by a 16th. Note, just think of how you would normally count for 16th notes. One e and the dotted eighth note makes up the one end and the 16th note makes up the in bar four, we see a combination of dotted notes.

First, we have a dotted quarter note and an eighth note making up beats one and two, the same as in the second one. Then we have a dotted eighth note 10 a 16th note followed by a coordinate, making a beats three and four, like in bar three. Here's how you'd play this. Now let's check out the same example but with the dotted notes having their dotted rest equivalence instead. In bar one, we see a dotted half wrist, which means that we have to have silence for beats one and two, as well as beat three. That's followed by a quarter note making up the fourth beat of the first bar.

In bar two, we see a dotted line Quarter wrist, which means we have silence for the first beat, and the first half of the second beat. That's followed by an eighth note which makes up the second half of the second beat. And then we have that same phrase repeating again for beats three and four. In both three, we see a dotted eighth wrist, which means silence for the first three sixteenths of the first beat. That's followed by a 16th note which makes up the fourth 16th of the first beat, and a quarter note which makes up B two. Then we have the exact same phrase again, which repeats for beats three and four of the bar.

Now in bar four, we have a dotted quarter wrist, indicating son's four beats one and the first half of beat two. That's followed by an eighth note which makes up the second half of the tune. Then we have a dotted thrust, indicating silence for the first three sixteenths of the third beat. And that's followed by a 16th note which makes up the fourth 16th of the third beat. And then to end off the bar we have a quarter note. Remember to count it and you'll be less likely to get lost.

If you see a dotted quarter wrist. Remember to count for eighth notes. If you see a dotted eighth wrist, remember to count 16th notes. Let's play through it.
