DESCRIPTION: Jaundice is a common condition in newborns. Though this is not an alarming situation in newborns, if not addressed at the right time this could cause damage to the internal organs and sometimes death.
Jaundice causes yellowish skin and conjunctiva (white of the eye) by an increase in bilirubin in blood as newborn livers are not mature to manage the excessive bilirubin. The liver becomes mature enough to handle the bilirubin about two to three weeks after birth at which jaundice will subside.
Breast milk jaundice may be found in some breastfed babies. It may persist slightly longer and subside within two to three months. This is a mild condition and does not cause any harm to the health.

Glucose-6-Phosphate dehydrogenase is an enzyme whose deficiency (G6PD) is an inherited condition that causes jaundice in newborns.
