I'd like to give you a short summary then of the definition stage. The three most important components of your definition. Firstly, your goal. Your goal answers the question, what do you want and it sets out the whole aim of your project. Supporting that are your objectives, they answer the question, how do you want it? And in particular, you're looking at a time or cost, the quality criteria for success.
Thirdly, you've got scope, and scope answers the question how much of it Do you want it is the breadth and the depth of your ambition for the project. In addition to that, other features will come into your definition You need to start thinking right at the early stages about key risks and assumptions that you need to make uncertainties in your project. You perhaps need to think about who the recipients are, who the people are that you'll be dependent upon your stakeholders and start to, to document who they are. You need to think about dependencies and what things you are dependent upon to make your project work. You also need to think about external constraints, which will limit your choices and dictate certain actions. And there may be a range of other factors to consider.
Right up front, you need to document your project in what is usually known as a project brief or a project terms of reference or outline project initiation. Sometimes even called an outline project plan. isn't a true plan. It stating the key parameters around the success and failure of your project, it is the basis for that very first go, No Go decision that very first gateway, that gateway governance process will ensure that making form decision about whether or not to proceed the basis of whether your project looks like it will make good business sense. Without a clear definition of what your project is, and what it is not, that decision cannot be taken. So, project definition phase creates the foundations the deepest foundations are a solid project.
