Maintaining a non destructive workflow while editing in Photoshop, it's very crucial to easily make any changes to file either while you're editing or even later, this sometimes called in the e4 non destructive editing. And there are few methods that we can be applying while we're designing to maintain our layers and our file, like using masking along with selection and using adjustment layers which we can see in here. And also converting or layers and smart objects or even applying or retouching on a separate layer. And don't worry guys, we'll be covering all these techniques later through the course. However, now let's start by masking and how we apply them. And also what our masks in first place.

Well, you can think of masking as we are applying a paper on our layer to hide maybe background or some parts of your image and show or reveal other parts and what's really Cool about most things that we can be adjusting at most anytime, maybe to show more parts of your image or even hide other parts. And here in that image, you can see it better. So here we have the guy standing in front of that gravity wall. And that's basically not the original image, as that guy initially was standing in the background in here, so let me disable that most pressing Shift clicking in here. Here's our original image. Then I applied a mask on that image to hide background and show our newly added layer to that document.

And as you can see, guys, what's unique about masking that we can be removing them anytime and restoring our original image by just clicking shift or holding Shift key and clicking on that mask, and we are restoring our image. And we can also get it back by holding Shift key and clicking on our mask. And we are hiding the background once again. And what's also cool is that we can be adjusting or most to hide or show other ports for more image. So let me select brush tool and show you guys what I mean selecting brush tool we have black and white, black will be hiding and white will be revealing you can think of that as light will be bossing by white so if I start painting was white swabbing colors, pressing X, then let's make sure that we are on normal modes for our blending modes and all we need to do is start painting over the top part to reveal more areas from our image.

Well maybe is up doesn't really look amazing. However I wanted to show you guys how it looks like because we have completely different two images in here. However, we can be hiding the bar once again swabbing colors, and painting was black to hides apart. So let me increase brush size. So can do it quickly. Voice and can be hiding our boy or even boss of his outfits just like that, and so on.

So let me undo that. And let's see how we can be creating a mosque. So let me first start by removing that mosque in here right clicking that mask, I'm going to be deleting layer mask. So here we have our original image and let me also delete that layer. So we are starting from scratch. And by the way, guys, if you would like to follow along, you can be finding these images in your resources in masking folder where you can be selecting zoos to images to start with going back to our file, and kind of start selecting or avoid the easy way going to select.

And we'll be selecting that one by choosing subjects and Photoshop is already selecting web boy for us was almost 80% Accuracy in that case, however, can be zooming in a bit, maybe to add parts to here. So selecting Quick Selection Tool and trying to add support in here and I still don't have the selection yet, and it's not a big deal. We're going to be modifying that when we apply our mask. So now in order to apply mosque, all we need to do is to go to that icon here and clicking that mosque icon, which will be converting that selection into a mosque. So let me do that. And instantly we are getting a mask applied to our layer.

So let me zoom out so you can imagine how it looks like and anytime you'd like to get our background back we can be disabling that must by clicking shift, or holding Shift key and clicking on the thumbnail, which will be disabling layer mask and can get a bad boy holding Shift key and clicking on thumbnail and also it can be previewing that must be even better by holding Alt or Option key and clicking on the thumbnail to reviews that small thumbnail in here in your canvas. So you can imagine how it looks like and we can see here that we have white area or showing our void and black area is hiding background. So you can think of that as light passing through a mosque. And also you can be modifying your mosque in that mode or that review if you like, by bending over some as to hide more of your image footswitch to brush tool, and maybe reducing brush size, pressing lifts square brackets can be using brush size, and maybe going for a hard brush as well so it can crease hardness and let's paint maybe in here like that.

Now it can be pressing alter option key once again to see how it looks like on our image. So now we are Showing or go high import of background as well. So let's get back to that review pressing ALT option key. So you can really get that concept of black and white swapping colors, pressing X so we have black on foreground and painting over these areas to hide them once again, pressing ALT option key and clicking on thumbnail of layer mask to get our image once again. So let me zoom in pressing model control plus keyboard and maybe you had a 90 or 80% selection accuracy and now we need to be refining that one as it's also affecting or most and can do that by going to properties barrel will be finding or most properties in here, where we are selecting or layer and also selecting or most considered, we have density we can be reducing that one to have a 50 or 60% of our muscles.

Density. However, we're not going to be applying that now. So let's keep it as this. And if we scroll down in here we have select a mosque, where we can be refining or mosque. Maybe if you are using an older version of Photoshop, you will be finding refine mosque in here instead. So you can be clicking that one to edit your mask.

And by default, it's not going to be looking like that. So let me scroll up guys. Here you have view mode, you can be selecting from any of these reviews or views. And I like to select on black and bringing opacity all the way to full. You can find it maybe initially at 50% which is fine as well hovers at one is giving us more contrast so you can be seeing our finger better. And you can see that we don't have this selection.

We don't have smooth lines. And we can be modifying that applying some of these sliders in here. And also using some of those tools on left side backlit First start using glue sliders. So here we have edge detection, where you can be trying to play with these sliders. Here. In that case, we don't have a specific values to apply, it's going to be different from one image to another.

So you need to be playing with these sliders and see how you want to be looking like. However, maybe in that case, it's slightly enhancing or musk can be trying small treaties as well to see if it's enhancing your mosque or not. In that case, I don't really see any difference. So I'm going to be disabling that one. Then here we have global refinements, where you can be smoothing your must, which is really nice. Maybe even more.

Now we have a smoother lion who can be increasing that one, even a bit. Starting to look moist already. Hence, you can see and also can be feathering your mosque just like selection where it's not going to be so short line He likes that hour. I don't really like to feather selection or mosques that much. So also if you are favoring your mosque, you can be adding contrast if you would like, or you can be trying contrast, which will be giving you a very short edge. And maybe it's not the best option for your masking.

So let's keep that one also as toes on zoo. and here also we have shift edge which can be shifting your mask, either a bit outside or inside. So let me show you guys how it looks like maybe using that edge a bit. Sometimes it could be nice to get rid of that Halo or that white line around your selection. However, in some cases also you might be losing some details, so you need to be careful using that one. And anytime you'd like to be checking your original image you can be hitting B on keyboards for review, so you can be checking your original mask Find one.

And you can find that option also in here preview if you'd like to show review. And also we have high quality review, which I'm not enabling as well as that one is already stressing our PC already, so I'm not going to be applying that one. Now maybe you can be applying that one liter to make sure that you are happy with your mask and let me disable that one once again. And also here we have a couple of options we have invert route can be inverting or mosque, just like that to show background or get it back as tools. And also you can be clearing selection, however, recommend applying that now as it will be clearing or mosque and also we have output settings where you can be applying decontaminate colors. That will be nice mainly to remove that outer glow or halo around your selections.

However, I'm not going to be uploading that one now, as this one will be missing our original image. So I'm going to be applying that one and re editing or mosque once again. So here now we have a better result for our mosque. And let's go back and select a mosque, where we can be enhancing even almost better, we can be trying even that option decontaminate colors, where it's actually looking better that way. And also we have amounts you can be reducing that amount, if you feel it's missing your image sometimes, or keep it as tools. And since we are using that option, we have output two options, where it's going to be creating a new layer was a new layer mask, as that option is usually missing your image your original image, and also can be outputting that one to a new layer or new document.

However, we want to keep it as this, that option. And also every time we're hitting Ok, Xu sliders are reset. As you can see, we're getting zero values everywhere. So if you'd like to remember your last use setting As you can be checking that one, maybe if you are working on similar images for the same toy, and on left side as well we have some tools to re edit our mosque. So we have good selection tool where we can be adding or removing some boards from our mosque. So can be increasing brush size using right square bracket.

And maybe you can be adding some ports to here. Also, if you'd like to see better, maybe you can be reducing opacity for black while you're adding to your mask, maybe a bit like that. And also selecting your own skin, which will be showing some of your image. You'd like to see what you are adding or removing from your mask. However, let's get it back to black again and discover other tools on the left side so on black, increasing capacity, and selecting the tool, she's really amazing. This one is called refine edge brush tool and increasing brush size as well a bit just a bit where we need to go just on edges, especially It was here or details like that.

Heavy in that example, it's not giving us this result, since the guy's hairstyle is so easy to refine. However this might be very helpful was messy here, maybe beard or even some tiny details within other images. And I'm going to be discovering more complicated images later. However, now let me undo that pressing Command or Ctrl Z as I really think it's looking nicer that way or can be trying the tool also on all pros. To hit some hair here as you can see, and also we have the regular brush tool where we can be adding or removing some parts so maybe to smooth that curve in here we can be increasing brush size, a bit Instead of adding can be pressing alter option key to remove and going slightly like that. Oh, that's too bad.

I'm going to be adding the port that missing both once again, so it's by default on plus where it's going to be adding to our most. Maybe you can be reducing hardness for our crush right clicking we can see that we have size hardness, we can be smoothing that on a bit. A bit. Oops, come on z. Proof selected, pressing ALT option key, going just a little bit to smooth that curve. And it can be also checking his jackets.

Looking nice in here. I don't think we need to be adjusting that one. So now this mosque is looking really nice who can be applying that one, we have a very clean mosque. Well, we can be disabling that one anytime if we want to, by pressing Shift and clicking on our thumbnail. Maybe you have some missing hairs in here over, it's not really affecting our image. And now we can be adding that background layer by going to the document in here.

Make sure that you're unlocking your layer, then you can be pressing Command or Ctrl C to copy that layer by going to it or you shortcut. then going back to our file, zooming out a bit, where we can be pasting that one Command or Ctrl V. Then we need to rearrange our layers and enlarging our layer we need to transform that one selecting or move tool pressing Command or Control T then pressing all to enlarge from center and here we go, we have our image and we can be going back to our original layer anytime, just maybe all we need to do is to make him darker or even increase brightness for our background. So we can be adding adjustment layer from here, maybe levels to make it darker, a bit darker. All can be doing the same as well from image adjustment or can be selecting levels.

Okay. However, this direction will be destroying our background layers. So if we make it darker, will not be able to undo that unless we are using the history button or pressing undo. While using adjustment layers we'll be applying a layer whose levels on top of all we're going to be discovering them in detail. However, this also on destructive approach for our design. So we can be sliding that slider in here.

Right or left to make it darker, maybe we need to increase brightness for that one a bit too much our invoice brightness in here. So they are blending better in that image. So as you can see noise is completely non destructive we can be disabling levels anytime and also can be disabling most anytime by clicking on the thumbnail to get our original back if we want to maybe for any design reason, and instead of using selection and getting rid of that background will be destroying our layer so we can be getting that mask once again holding Shift key and clicking on clear and can be loading that selection of that refine mask by pressing Command or Ctrl and clicking on the clear in here. Now we have our selection back once again, we can be duplicating that layer. Just for example guys, I'm going to be disabling that one disabling mosque in here or maybe deleting of mosque.

Right click We have also other options in here to add most to selection or subtract must from selection or intersect masco selection or even who can select most options. However, in that case, I'm going to be leaving the clear most. And now we need to be investing or selection just to leave that background pressing Command Shift or or Ctrl Shift or on PC and hitting leads. Now we are getting the same results. But the difference between those two layers in here is that we are destroying our layer. So there is no way to get that background back unless we are using the history bundle, which you can be accessing that one if you don't see it in here from one and you will be finding history bank.

You can be going back of course to that clear point or maybe select inverse. We are getting that background once again. So yes, we can go back in time to that step. However, if we already executed too many steps, and for any reason we need to go back to that stubble, we'll be losing all the steps in between. And also if when that to a step and we make any changes, we will be losing those steps. So here for instance, if we press Command D, we lost already that three step which was in between removing that background layer, so it's more convenient to apply masks instead of greeting your background.

And also can be unlinking your mask an image by clicking that icon in here. And what's really cool also that you can be copying your image along with your must to another file, so can be selecting that layer, pressing Command or Ctrl C to copy that layer. Or instead of copying and pasting, we can be dragging that layer to that file. So can be holding on layer and just like that to our image in here, and it's coming along with its own mosque. And that case, it's even looking better than the other image. Maybe, as he's fitting more in here, maybe you can be bringing our levels layer.

So copying the clear copy Command or Ctrl. C and pasting that one on top of our background layer Monday. And one more thing guys, we can be copying that must to other layers. So by holding Alt or Option key, we can be dragging that mask to maybe our background layer and disabling our noise layer, which will be looking like that maybe you can be adding another layer and rearranging that one setting that one was black, where we are getting a very nice artwork like that. And also can be creating a selection by selecting or most, make sure that you are selecting your material. Your image to edit your most and selecting maybe the selection tool and maybe drawing any quick selection in here, maybe use an angle and I'm going to be filling that one was black to hide also supports so we have already black on foreground.

So pressing ALT option key was Backspace to fill it with foreground color, pressing Command or Control D. And as you can see guys, we are getting a very nice or the action using masks. Now moving to our next lesson, we're going to be discovering more about mosques
