What are all these different parts of the Excel screen, and what do they control?

In this video, we are going to explore the Excel environment, learning about what all the different parts of the Excel screen mean and what they do. And this is the first step in making sure we know how to navigate around this product. Starting at the very top, you have the Q A t, which stands for the Quick Access Toolbar. And yours might look very different just having the standard commands such as Undo, Redo and save. But you can customize your Quick Access Toolbar over time placing all of your favorite commands on it, and making sure that they'll be visible all the time for quick and easy access. Below the cube at we've got the ribbon and at the top, you'll notice all of the different tabs of the ribbon.

As soon as you click on a different tab. a whole range of different commands appears. Each of the commands are contained within ribbon groups. For example on the Home tab The clipboard group, Font group, alignment group, etc. And this makes finding the particular commands that we are looking for easier, you can simply click on the different tabs, or even use your scroll wheel on the mouse to move quickly between all of the different Ribbon tabs. Below the ribbon, we've got the formula bar on the right hand side, and the name box on the left.

The formula bar is very important as we'll be using it to identify cell contents that are actually being driven by formulas. Below this, we have the column headers, and on the far left hand side, we've got the row names. And these are fundamental to the spreadsheet as the intersection of any column and row creates a cell address. And as you can see, each cell has a particular cell address. So the rows and columns make up the actual spreadsheet that we see which is also known as the big grid on the very far right Got the scroll bar for the vertical axis, and we've got a horizontal one in the bottom right hand corner. Now, we are never going to be using these since we will always use keyboard shortcuts to navigate quickly.

At the bottom of the spreadsheet, we've got some worksheet controls and the actual worksheets contained within the workbook. You'll notice two arrows in the bottom left hand corner. These allow us to navigate between the different worksheets. If you hover over them, you'll actually get a little bit of information about some different functionality that the arrows actually have. We can click on these different worksheets to activate them. And as you'll notice, each new sheet has its own big grid.

And then right at the bottom of the Excel screen, we have the status bar. The status bar shows important controls and information, which we'll learn about in the future. If yours doesn't show all of this information that we see over here, simply right click, and you'll notice that you can turn these on On and off, I've just turned on the zoom control, which allows us easy ability to zoom in and out. Although once again, we probably are unlikely to use us since a better way is to use the Ctrl key on your keyboard and your scroll wheel on your mouse. But in summary, these are the different elements of the screen that we see within Excel and we are going to be making reference to all of these in the future. So hopefully this helps you to get acquainted with the Excel interface.
