I have several workbooks open, each containing multiple worksheets. How do I move quickly between these?

Transcript

In this video, we're going to learn how to navigate quickly between the different worksheets of a workbook, and then also between multiple workbooks. And eventually this will be the case, when working in Excel, you will probably have multiple worksheets, sometimes so many that you can't even see all of them on the worksheet tab at the bottom. So we need to learn how to quickly navigate between all of these different worksheets. And as we've said before, in the bottom left hand corner is the arrow strip, which gives you control over these worksheets. For example, clicking on the right arrow, you will notice that it changes which sheets are visible. Similarly, clicking on the left hand side simply takes the sheets in and out of view.

However, to quickly jump to the front or the back, you can hold the control button and click as normal as we see with the tooltip. So holding down control and a simple click, takes you all the way to the end, control and back all the way to The beginning. Or if you want to right click, it'll show you all of the sheets that you may have. And simply a double click will activate that particular sheet. But if you want to use your keyboard, you can use Ctrl and page up and page down, which actually changes the active sheet one at a time. So page up moves back towards the beginning, and control page down, changes the active sheet towards the end.

Another useful keyboard shortcut is to use shift and F 11 to create a brand new sheet, or you can use the plus icon in the bottom right hand corner. So shifting if living creates a brand new sheet. So that's how to move within the worksheets. But what about if we have multiple workbooks open all we've got different applications. I'm going to hold down Ctrl in to open up a brand new And let's do that a few times. So we've now got several Excel workbooks open.

The first keyboard shortcut that is useful to know is to hold down Control and the tab key because that cycles through all of the open Excel workbooks, have a look at the name of the workbook that open carry. And watch what happens as I press Ctrl N tab. Can you see it is cycling through all of the different Excel workbooks that are in fact open. And that shortcut is specific to excel because it only cycles through Excel documents, Excel spreadsheets. The next two shortcuts that we can learn a slightly different and they're great because they work not only with Excel, but for windows in general. For example, Alton tab is a great shortcut for switching between the two most recently used applications.

So quickly, holding an ALT and then hitting tab jumps between the two most recent use applications. And this doesn't have to be within EXO pets, you might be working through a PDF document together with Excel or your browser and Excel, quickly hitting alt tab will jump between those two applications. holding down the Alt key, and then pressing the tab button will actually bring up a list of all of the open applications that you might have. And using the tab key, we can actually move between any of these applications. Once we release, that will become the active application that was holding down the Alt key and pressing tab. But keeping the Alt key held down.

We can reverse the direction holding Shift and the techie. And then finally, if using Windows 10, holding down the Windows key and the tab button brings up this very useful talk to you and the reason why this is great is because we are able to immediately identify any of the open applications as well as the different desktop views that we might have and use our mouse to select these different applications very quickly. As you can see, the common denominator between all of these is the use of the tab key. Controlling tap cycles only through Excel spreadsheets. Alton tab is great at switching between applications. And the Windows key and tab opens up the task, which is a great addition to Windows 10.

So hopefully, you now have the skills needed to navigate amongst your many worksheets, and many open applications or spreadsheets. We'll see in the next video.
