I need to select cells that are not next to each other. How do I do this quickly?

Transcript

In the previous video, we saw how to make selections of contiguous data sets, using Ctrl. Shift down and right, and even using the mouse. However, how do we make selections of cells that are not next to each other, in other words, not contiguous. And we can learn how to do this number one with the mouse and then with the keyboard. To do this, you simply need to make your selection with your mouse click and drag to select this entire column of North. And if I also want to select south, but not east, I just need to hold down the Ctrl key, holding down the control key and now making my next selection keeps the previous selection intact.

So once again, holding down CTRL clicking and dragging to make my new selection. I've still got the control button held down. And as you can see, all of these selections get grouped together. And now we can perform some kind of formatting. This is equally for single cells oranges, for example. Looking down the CTRL key, I can make completely non contiguous selections.

If you wanted to do this with your keyboard, you can use the keyboard shortcuts we've already learned of Ctrl Shift and down, then to suspend that selection, simply hit Shift and f8. You'll notice that in the status bar, it says we now can add to the selection. By moving my directional keys, we no longer lose that active selection, Control Shift down once again, shifted eight, shift eight. And now we have the exact same result as using the mass. Now this is one place where I admit that sometimes using the mouse can be quicker, depending on the size of the data set. But between these two methods, you now know how to make quick selections of cells that are not next to each other.

We'll see in the next video.
