DESCRIPTION: Ideally, we all want to sleep through the night. However, it's our evolutionary and cultural heritage not to sleep all night long. For thousands of years, humans would wake in the night to tend to the baby, check on the children or the farm animals, re-stoke the fire. Nowadays we have the hope and the expectation to sleep a solid 8 hours. Yet sometimes what stops us from doing this isn't the baby or a predator, but our own upset feelings and fears about our sleep.

Repeating your bedtime routine, reading a boring book in dim light, practicing your relaxation techniques, are all sleep-supportive alternatives to getting upset or giving up on sleep, and going to the gym at 3 am. If you develop a consistent bedtime routine that works, this routine will eventually be able to help you train yourself to go back to sleep more quickly if you do wake up. This is one of the key parts of my sleep training program and it really is true that people can train themselves to get back to sleep...
