DESCRIPTION: Apologies to Yoda fans, but where sleep is concerned, try usually leads to failure. Sleep is the antithesis of trying: it is the ultimate letting go. What we want to do, rather, is to create the right inner as well as the outer environment for sleep, and then we need to stop worrying and relax. I know this is much easier said than done, but if you have created poor sleep habits over a long time, you will be able to retrain yourself if you take the time to do so.

Panicking or stressing about this will not help, but the right changes over time will.

At the end of the day, we need to walk a fine line between realizing how important sleep is, making it a priority in our lives, doing the right things, and then relaxing about it all. Stressing about sleep is one of the reasons people can continue to have a sleep problem long after the instigating problem (like the birth of a baby, changing jobs, etc) has disappeared. So we do what we can and then we relax.

One big lesson my clients...
