Okay to start our surface pattern design, I'm going to first explain what a surface pattern design is. So it's an illustration that repeats in every direction seamlessly. So that's what you would use for, like printing fabrics or wallpaper, things like that where you don't see necessarily a defined edge. And that's achieved by when something goes over one edge. It seamlessly comes over the other edge. You'll see how that works as we turn on our seamless mode.

The default Canvas when you open paint storm studio is is a landscape mode Canvas, and it's pretty low resolution. So we're going to start off by changing our canvas size. So we'll go over to image and click on canvas, resize The default resolution is set to 72. But I'm going to go ahead and change that to at least 150. As that's what is normally used in print and 150 up to 300 and click OK. And you'll see that the width and the height automatically changed but I'm going to change that to a different size. I'm going to work in inches so that I have a better idea of the size of this canvas.

So I'm going to use eight inches by eight inches. That's a pretty good size for most of my projects. But keep in mind that if you don't know what you want the final size to be. I would suggest starting off with a larger size because you can always scale it down. But if you try to scale something up, you will lose the quality of your image. So I'm going to go ahead and use this.

And you can input whatever size you you would like for yours and click OK. Now I have a square canvas. And I'm going to go ahead and turn on seamless mode, which is down here. And now you'll see that my canvas has this light outline. And then it spills over into this other area and that's going to show me what my repeat looks like. I mentioned working in layers, and so I'm going to use layer zero as my background layer. And so I will choose a background color.

I'm just gonna go for gray. So I'm going to use my fill tool, which is this little bucket over here. And I'm going to drop my color in. Now if yours did not work work right away, then this may be the problem. Make sure that you can see everything up here in this top bar. That's your tool options.

You may not be able to see over here where it says opacity, if I click on this cog wheel, Okay, there we go. I'm going to scale it down. And you'll see that even part of mine had spilled over off the screen. So make sure you can see where it says opacity, and if it's set to zero, you'll have to increase that up to 100. If your slider isn't working too well, you can always click on the number and input 100. And then you can try to fill again and it should work that time.

I'll open a new layer by clicking on this sticky note looking icon. And this is the layer that I'm going to begin drawing on So I'm just gonna draw some basic flowers. Just do a little basic floral print. And so pick a brush. I'm just going to use this first round brush that's in the very first category. And I mentioned the brush, resize hotkey.

So if I tap on that, and then I slide my pencil left or right, it'll increase or decrease the size of the brush. I'm gonna make it pretty small. I don't need anything too big right now. And I'm going to choose my brush color which I will just go ahead and do black and I'll just draw a few basic flowers on here. You may have noticed that I was just able to undo my last drawing by tapping with two fingers. So let me show you how to set that up.

Before I forget. You can go to options and gestures and you'll see that I have a two finger action set to undo when I single tap two fingers and I can redo by single tapping three fingers. So you can set that up if you would like that or just use your Undo and Redo buttons if you want to undo or redo an action Okay, so if I want to move things around I can, which I think I will. I'm going to use my lasso tool to select that allows me to freehand select or you could use the rectangle or the magic wand. Just going to select this one and then use the Move tool to move that over just a little bit. Okay.

And then you have to make sure to deselect by using the x Okay, I'm going to go ahead and fill in the flower petals. And so I'm going to choose a couple different colors. Okay, then I'll grab my fill tool. And the field tool works for like an enclosed drawing. If you have any gaps it'll spill over like this will spill over into all three pedals. And then I can fill in each individual pedal.

If you were to have any gaps that might spill over into your whole canvas, then you would just have to close that gap and try it again. I'm going to pick a color from one of these other flowers by using the color picker. I think I'll pick the yellow and use that to fill in the center here. Okay, so now open a new layer by clicking on this sticky note icon again. And so now I'll be working on layer two. On layer two, I'll just draw in a few random shapes.

I'll go back to my black brush. Now that I have shapes scattered throughout, I think I'm going to move a couple of them. But let me show you this. I can only select things that are within that outline of my canvas. So if I wanted to select this circle, I'd have to select the corresponding one within the canvas and then do select that. And let's say something spills over the edge.

You wouldn't be able to move that without having to move it In portions because it won't let me select the top half of that, just to show you I can only move to the bottom. So with something like that I would recommend first using a sketch layer above your background color and sketching things in so you can see where you'd like them to be before you start working on your final drawing, or drawing all your shapes within the constraints of the canvas and then moving things over to where you would like them to be. Okay, so now I'm going to fill these in with a little color to I will do some of them in white Now here you'll see that the Fill tool also only works within the actual canvas. So once I fill in the top half of that diamond or square, then I'd have to go up to the top and fill in the bottom half.

Okay, so I'm going to pick the colors out of my. Also, I can't pick colors outside of the canvas. painting, then use the Fill tool to fill some of these in. parents think that's good for that one. Use my yellow And then the blue Okay, so now everything is filled in. This is a very rustic drawing.

It's not a drawing class I'm just showing you how to use the, the software. Okay, once you're happy with your design, then you can deselect seamless mode and this is your actual tile This is what you would export and upload to something like spoon flour or red bubble nub those sites that does seamless repeat mode and you would have to have it on the basic repeat setting. Paint storm studio only does seamless mode in basic form not in half break or half drop or anything like that. Okay, so then we could go ahead and export this so you would go to File and click Save As and it will give you the options of saving to iTunes iCloud or camera roll. If you save it to your camera roll, then it will be a JPEG. It will be a flat image that you can't really edit.

So I would recommend saving to iCloud or iTunes where you have the option to save it as a any one of these types of files. And I would say to either save it as a paint storm studio file if you plan on working on it some more within paint storm studio, or you can export it as a PSD file which preserves your layers. Okay, so let's say I save it as a PSD file. Then I could just save it into a folder and rename my file and save it. Okay, that's it for this lesson. And we will talk about mirror designs in the next lesson.
