So welcome to the unit on list making. And this is going to be the time when a whole bunch of you guys, I think really get a sense for how to write. So free writing is hopefully something you've done something that I would encourage you to do a lot of and continue doing. But this little bit here, list writing is really where a lot of you I think you're gonna make sense of this. So some common criticisms that other comedy courses get is Oh, I thought we dive more into writing. How does writing work?

How does joke writing work? Isn't there a system I don't understand what I'm supposed to do? There's an assignment that I posted with the last video, the one on free writing that I want you guys to check out. It's the one where Jerry Seinfeld writes, that's a great system. I would encourage you to continue to free right you have to of course, find your own way of writing but this is a system that I was taught by Gilda Hauser I started doing stand up comedy back in 2000. into in Detroit, Michigan. And she was a really good stand up comic, then.

And she still is, and it doesn't do as much of it. But this is the system that I was taught from her and from a couple of uncles of mine who also did stand up comedy. And basically, it's, it's pretty simple. Essentially, you're going to sit down and you're going to just write a list. So using the example of 711 from the last time that we started, free writing, I want to go ahead and work this way also. We're going to use it.

We use the same subject. We're just going to use it in this list lesson here. So what do you list out basically, what I want you to do is open a document I use Evernote, which you can see down here, Evernote is a great dock system to use for keeping things I can access it from my phone. But you can use anything you can use a piece of paper and a pen you can use a Google Doc you can use just about anything. I happen to use Evernote but just open it up, click create a list which is This little tab right here. And now what I want you to do is list out every fact, you know, from your mind about the subject, so it doesn't have to be a fact that's, you know, correct in the scientific way we think about fact it's just a fact.

So 711 might be, like I said, Warren, and Canton center road. Whoops. I might say really, just anything that comes to mind slurpees I don't even have to have any context, sticky floors. I bought a ton of energy drinks. When I was 12 711, I used to pass on my way home from high school. Whatever you guys can see my terrible writing, typing here.

I used to pass it on the way home from high school. Let's come up with a couple more of them. There. Were always weird people smoking outside that 711 was there as long as I can remember. So all of these things are true. Also 711 responsible for more childhood diabetes than anyone else in the country.

That's not really true. But it doesn't matter. It's a fact. Again, 711 just to explain to any of you who are not familiar is a just a convenience store here in America. And we'll say it will say this. It's not true, but what's a 711?

Also number one, employer of Indian and Pakistani immigrants in the 90s in the 80s, and 90s. Also not true, maybe it is maybe it's not but it's just a fact for the purposes of this. of This will say eight flavors of Slurpee that may or may not be true. So what I want you to do is go through these and basically come up with as many as you can and why you should just keep writing. It doesn't have to be anything in particular. It doesn't have to be.

There's no rhyme or reason to it. Basically, it's just a list of things that you're throwing out. And you should keep going until it kind of becomes like you're having second and third, or maybe even four thoughts about what you're doing, like, Oh, did I already write that? Or is there anything else to do? And in when you come up with it, it should be pretty exhaustive. And we'll I'll show you what to do with this list in a minute.

But basically, you just want to go ahead and continue writing. So let's take a look at this. This is a list that I've already put together for something else I'm working on. I'm working on a list for my office for working in offices. And you can see it's just a whole bunch of different things in here. I worked a minimum of 45 hours a week.

JOHN is a bully. He really was he was total. I was awful. It was like playing a game of Missile Command or Lucy and Ethel in the Chocolate Factory, went to a ton of events. And then I listed out all the events we went to every conference is the same. I have sub lists.

So this is great because you might end up finding a topic like every conference is the same or we went to a bunch of events and like eight flavors of Slurpee, I might do this. I might pet tab under it and then put coke cherry on pina colada. Blue, just blue was a flavor. I mean, there's maybe a joke there eventually. And what I'm trying to do is just sort of figure out where you know where where could a joke be. So you want to go ahead and do this if you're typing, you know, on a on a page, if you're if you're writing or typing, you want to do at least one page, maybe two pages, depending on how deep in the subject you want to get maybe three pages but if you're if you're writing out specifically, you should write out at least two pages.

Single line of just a list. And again, you're not gonna use these specifically, but you're getting as much knowledge as you can out of your head and onto the page. So that's the way we approach lists. In the next lesson, we're going to go through how we begin building out lists by asking questions to get pretty in depth and interactive about the subject.
