How should you dress when you're giving a speech or a presentation? There's no one set perfect thing to wear when you're giving a presentation. The main thing is you do not want to confuse your audience. You don't want to distract your audience and you want whatever it is you're talking about your message to be amplified by what you're wearing. So, if you're a dairy farmer and you're giving a presentation on the dangers of mad cow disease, you probably don't want to be seen in a banker suit. If you are an avant garde artist, you probably don't want to be seen in a boring, drab dress that looks like it came from a 1980s dress for success.
Manual. You need to have something that's consistent with what you're about now. For example, most of my clients work for large corporations, large government organizations are united nations organizations and they are in suits and ties or similar dress clothing, if they are women. So when I'm giving a speech or speaking in video like this, I'm wearing a traditional somewhat conservative business suit, tie, French cuffs the whole bit. I do this because I don't want people wondering Hmm, why is this guy in a tie dye shirt? Is he going off to a party?
I don't want to confuse people. Now it's not that you are going to love this tie. This tie is specifically chosen to not stand out to be muted. It's that I don't want you to focus on what I'm wearing. I want you to focus on what I'm saying. So that's the rule of thumb.
When you are giving a presentation, you don't want people to notice what you're wearing. And that means typically fitting in with how other people in your community, your business, your industry are dressing. And if you're going to vary maybe a notch or two above, whatever you What else is wearing but not too many notches above. There have been times when I've been asked to do a speech or a training in front of a technical audience and a high tech audience. And I went there in a suit and tie and all of a sudden, no one's wearing a suit or tie. I quickly pull off the time, throw the jacket and now I fit in so you've got to be ready to adapt.
And like it or not yet to be where people are judging you based on what you wear doesn't mean you always have to wear expensive clothes. You do need to wear something that sends the right message that you're trying to convey.
