By now you may have deduced I'm a fan of videotaping panel discussions, your rehearsal presentations of all sorts, I'm going to ask you to do it one other place. And that is the actual presentation you give as a part of this panel in front of the real audience. Now, you don't have to hire a big TV production crew or make a big deal out of it. But you can simply hand your cell phone to a friend and colleague, make a new friend on the front row and say, Hey, do you mind just videotaping a few parts? my opening comments, and as much as it'll take before it just out. Do that.
And then you can watch how you did in real life. Because sometimes, how you did in rehearsal is very different from how you did in real life. Maybe the nerves got to you, and you started speaking quickly again. You need to know that on the other hand, sometimes you're much better in real life because you can feel it Off the energy of the room, you can really look at people. Maybe someone asked you a question, and you gave a profoundly interesting, memorable anecdote. If you have that on video, it's really helpful.
It will reinforce the things you did well. The real key to being a great panel presenter is to learn from every panel presentation you ever give. The best way to learn is to watch the video, figure out what worked well. So you can do it again. great speakers are great, not because they were born that way, or it's a natural talent. Quite often, they're great, because they speak a lot and they learn a teeny little bit from every presentation.
They give. Martin Luther King Jr. in his year that he gave the I Have a Dream speech spoke 300 times that year. Ronald Reagan gave nearly the same speech hundreds of times a year from 1964 While he was elected president in 1980, Bill Clinton seen by many as a great public speaker, gets attention for major speeches like a democratic conventions. But they don't realize he's still giving 300 speeches a year. So part of it is speak on as many panels as you can. And the other part is get video of yourself every time so you can learn from it.
Great comedians still record their sets on stage. So they can learn you can learn to record every panel presentation. You're on
