You have five clear messages, not five big themes and 27 sub points for each message, but five main ideas, messages you want to communicate. In this speech, this presentation. Now, it's still not time to whip out that PowerPoint. And believe me, I'll let you do that at some point, just not yet. Now, you've got to brainstorm on examples, case studies, ideally, stories for each message point. Now, if you work with a speech writing team, a communications team, you need to sit around, could be at lunchtime could be after work with a beer, whatever your organization does.
You need to actually sit around and have a conversation. This simply doesn't work very well. I find by people just typing and you could have a conference call even if you're not in the same room. Now if you're doing this speech for yourself, you need to actively think about when did I talk to a client About this actual problem, what's a customer that experienced this? Wasn't there an issue with one of our employees in the San Diego plant about this very issue last week. Your number one problem as a speaker is not that you're going to shake, and sweats going to come down to people are going to point and laugh.
Your number one problem as a speaker, is that no one's gonna remember anything you say. So that's why this step is at salutely crucial, simply stating a message. fact you can tell somebody the message, you're going to tell them, tell them and tell them you tell them. It's not going to be remembered. If you don't flesh it out with examples, case studies, ideally, a story that really flushes it out. And in the bonus section, I'll give you more information on how to really build out these stories, but this is critical.
So that's what you need to do if you're working with a group. talk this out and then Come up with a shorthand way of reminding you what to say I would not recommend writing this out word for word. Once you write a speech out word for word, then it's this whole document that everyone is changing every comma and period forever. And that's a massive time waste. So don't put anything down on paper yet or a computer screen. We just want to three words bullet points to remind you of an example a case study.
