Thanks for being a part of this course on how to speak to foreign audiences. If you follow the tips that we've discussed here, I think you're going to be quite successful in your presentations. And you've heard me say this throughout. But keep in mind, it's not that different than speaking to domestic audiences. Because let's face it, most speakers most places are awful, and are boring and don't really communicate much. So your goal shouldn't be to be just as good as most speakers speaking in their own language.
That's to lowest standard. Your goal should be to be great to have the ideas you care about the most understood by your audience, remembered by your audience, so they can take the actions you're advocating. That's the goal. Don't ever lose sight of the goals and the other things are relatively simple. Trying to talk to the translator in advance stripping out The cultural reference points that people just are not going to understand because they don't watch the same TV shows and watch the same sports. But putting in new metaphors, new analogies, new stories that transcend human experience everywhere.
If you do that, and you speak a little bit slower, and you just go out of your way to really connect with people, you're going to do an excellent job with this speech. My final tip to you is, don't stop here. One good speech in one foreign place can create more and more invitations to speak elsewhere. So here's the final tip. When you are speaking to this audience, for real in the real world, have someone a friend, a colleague, the organizer, in the corner somewhere, preferably maybe in the front row, quietly capturing your speech The entire time because you want to learn from this speech, you want to figure out what worked. Where were you expecting applause and you didn't get it, where were you not expecting any response and all of a sudden people are laughing.
When you have a video record of your presentation, you've got something to go back to study to figure out exactly what worked so you can make it better. What didn't work, so you can tweak it. So please video record, every practice you do, but also every speech do that and you will be a fantastic communicator, a great speaker in any language. Good luck.
