Prepare a written inventory of your financial situation. Include debts and assets.
For each debt you have, answer the following:

What is the current total outstanding balance?
What is the interest rate?
What is the current minimum monthly payment?

Do some soul searching in this exercise. Think back to debts you might have but tried or chose to forget, like that $500 you borrowed from your brother six years ago and never paid back.
Make a list of your assets, the things you own that have a market value. Be as detailed as you'd like.
