DESCRIPTION: I&rsquo;m going to start off with some definitions here even though if you have any of these, you probably are acutely aware of what they mean. Other than being a word I often misspell, a hemorrhoid is a swollen vein in the rectum or anus. Active hemorrhoid means that it is bleeding. Varicosities are swollen veins elsewhere in the body, the most commonly known ones are those on the legs but they can also occur within your pelvic region internally or externally. The reason both hemorrhoids and varicosities are common during pregnancy and in postpartum is that the walls of the veins have become stretched out due to relaxin, there is also more blood volume during pregnancy and a heck of a lot more pressure while carrying a baby in utero and then pushing a baby out. Pelvic congestion or swelling is often present at the same time but can show up without hemorrhoids and varicosities.
