DESCRIPTION:
There are two measurements you are taking when you assess yourself for diastasis recti. First, you are looking for how wide the linea alba is so how many fingers you can fit between the sides of your abdominals. Second, you are feeling tension or measuring the depth that you can sink your fingers downward. Normal is less than 2 fingers in width and tension almost immediately when you push down however it is normal for the belly button to be a little wider and have a little less tension than elsewhere because that was once a hernia for your umbilical cord when you were in utero.
For self-assessment, you are going to be taking these two measurements in 3 places: about 2 inches above the belly button, at the belly button, and about 2 inches below the belly button. For each location, you tuck your chin, lift your head and shoulders and then feel for how many fingers wide the space is and how far down you can press toward your belly button. Rest your head and reset for each...
