"After 20 years of working with children and their families as a bilingual teacher, I said yes to a new chapter of life and became a professional birth and postpartum doula.  It is the perfect work for me and though it may sound crazy, I absolutely love bouncing out of bed when I get that call at midnight or 3:30 in the morning and my workday begins. The best part is that I get to integrate into my practice the many skills I've acquired teaching and learning with children and being a mother of several decades.
The idea of birth work was planted a long while ago with the birth of my second child when I experienced being attended by a collaborative team of women - nurses and midwives. I felt so grateful and so well taken care of that I seriously thought of becoming a midwife. I wanted every woman to experience being nurtured, supported, and respected while giving birth.
