We are now going to look at the enteric nervous system, which is also part of the autonomic nervous system, and is what some people call our second brain. The enteric nervous system is a complicated network of over 100 million neurons lining your gut wall from your esophagus to your anus. What is amazing about this system, is that it works independently from the brain. That is why it is called our second brain. If the brain stops functioning, our bodies can be kept alive by machines, but if our enteric nervous system ceases to work, we, unfortunately, cannot be revived. This is how important this area of the body is.
