Great stories have not just tension between the main characters, but they have increasing levels of tension. I understand you can't do that all of the time. But when you can't add extra elements of tension, so much the better you fought that you were going to lose $50,000 client. Now it turns out something so bad has happened. You're fearful of losing your whole career at extra elements of tension in your story, and you'll bring the audience along with you. It'll make for an even stronger emotional impact on them.
